Why we can’t wait to see ”Ocean’s Twelve”

WHY WE CAN’T WAIT Ocean’s Eleven, under the crafty direction of Steven Soderbergh, turned out to be a lark — and now we get to see Brad Pitt and George Clooney (pictured) take their high jinx to Europe.

THE PREMISE Danny Ocean (Clooney) and his partners-in-crime take up a challenge from European crook (Vincent Cassel) in a steal-off. Turns out the Euro-thief is working for the vengeful Vegas casino boss (Andy Garcia) who was fleeced by the gang in the first film.

SOURCE Clooney and Pitt’s 2001 remake of the 1960 Rat Pack vehicle, plus an unrelated script by George Nolfi (Timeline), about a European thief

THE BACK STORY Put Clooney, Pitt, a pregnant Julia Roberts, and Ocean’s newcomer Catherine Zeta-Jones (is she the 12th?) together in Rome, and you have a recipe for a paparazzi onslaught that threatens to overshadow the production. ”Guys, you don’t want a picture of us,” pleaded costar Casey Affleck, with girlfriend Summer Phoenix and their infant in tow, during filming. ”Go follow Julia around!”

BURNING QUESTION Soderbergh never struck us as a sequel kind of guy — that’s why you’ve never seen Sex, Lies, and Videotape II. Can he make lightning strike twice?
