Sky Captain: Keith Hamshere

Why we can’t wait to see ”Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”

WHY WE CAN’T WAIT The visuals look breathtaking — not just the retro-chic sci-fi New York sets and gizmos, but also the retro-sleek look of Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow (pictured) as the heroes.

THE PREMISE In the 1930s, pilot Law and his reporter ex-girlfriend (Paltrow) fight a megalomaniacal villain, Dr. Totenkopf, and his robot army.

SOURCE An original idea by writer/director Kerry Conran

THE BACK STORY Going George Lucas one better, rookie filmmaker Conran created everything in the movie on a computer, except for props, costumes, and actors. Well, one of the actors wasn’t there, having been dead for 15 years. That’s Laurence Olivier, resurrected via archival footage, as Dr. Totenkopf.

BURNING QUESTION Is this the future of fantasy filmmaking or just a $70 million experiment for the fanboys?

COME FOR Conran’s vision, complete with retro unironic optimism

STAY FOR Angelina Jolie, as the eyepatch-wearing leader of a squadron of amphibious warriors
