The Bird Man and the Lap Dancer

B

Eric Hansen has done things worthy of awe and jealousy. He has trekked through the forests of Borneo, tripped on the drug kava with the native tribes of Vanuatu, had sex on the beach with a beautiful woman between attempts to smuggle dried fish into Sri Lanka. And when he sticks to these entertaining yarns, this collection is a riot. Unfortunately, the stories get progressively more tiresome (the title entry reveals that strippers are — my stars! — experts at telling you what you want to hear). The experience of reading The Bird Man and the Lap Dancer is a bit like being cornered by a witty dinner guest with bad breath: The conversation may be lovely, but he wears out his welcome rather quickly.
