The old coot who dies at the start of Eulogy gets off easy. It’s us, the strangers at the funeral, who suffer, grieving over the shrill, rancid jokes that pass for quirky family dysfunction in writer-director Michael Clancy’s artificially ventilated feature debut. And lesbians! They’re the most scandalous punchlines of all, at least to this toxic family, who apparently restrict their media intake to the teachings of Howard Stern.
The cast itself is weirdly overqualified; participants include Hank Azaria, Zooey Deschanel, Ray Romano, and Debra Winger. So let’s assume the gang had fun together: They could say naughty stuff network TV wouldn’t allow, not caring that if Eulogy were a sitcom pilot, it would be dead on arrival.
