DVD roundtable with the ''Saved!'' cast
Macaulay Culkin, Mandy Moore, and Eva Amurri discuss the movie's take on religion and their experiences working on the film
In the spiritual satire, Saved!, Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin, and Eva Amurri form a veritable Breakfast Club of believers, as the mean girl, her handicapped brother, and the lone Jew. EW reunited the stars to chat about the DVD, karaoke, and scoches. Sco-what?
Are you more devout now?
MC The film respects religion, while showing how people justify their actions using the name of God. It points out the ugliness but also shows the beauty.
MM I wasn’t aware of the huge Christian youth culture. The film reveals that these characters aren’t caricatures. We had so much respect for the people we were portraying.
How did you get involved in the film?
MC I got attached first and said, ”Let’s get Mandy Moore and Eva Amurri. On the double!” [All laugh] I was looking for material and, [sarcastically] by the grace of God, this fell into my lap.
EA I had never read something so funny and so true to itself. Luckily, the filmmakers thought I was pretty okay.
MC You were only a scoche better than okay. Just a scoche. My word of the day.
MM I was the last to come aboard. Another actress [Anne Hathaway] was supposed to play Hilary Faye, but she dropped out at the last second. I thank my lucky stars for that.
How’d you learn to use a wheelchair?
MC I got an apartment with no carpets or furniture so I could wheel around for six months. In Vancouver, I went to a rehab facility and worked with paraplegics and quadriplegics. Whenever you do a movie, there are small details you take with you — piano lessons, ice-skating. Now I have this appreciation of getting out of bed and walking.
According to Mandy and Jena Malone’s commentary, Eva doesn’t smoke in real life.
MM You were a convincing smoker.
EA I was not a smoker before, but I smoked these absolutely revolting herbal cigarettes.
I understand karaoke was very important to filming.
EA So crucial!
MC Nothing brings people closer together. You should hear Mandy do some Eminem. Pretty impressive.
EA You should hear Mac do Sinatra.
MC I’m a crooner!
