Ja Rule is arrested on assault charge
Ja Rule is arrested on assault charge. He posts bail on charge stemming from a nightclub stabbing in Toronto last month
First Courtney Love, now Ja Rule. The rapper is the second pop star in the last few days to surrender himself to police for booking on an assault charge. For Ja Rule (real name: Jeffrey Atkins), the location was Toronto, and the charge was assault causing bodily harm, an accusation stemming from an incident at a Toronto nightclub last month in which an 18-year-old was stabbed in the back, Billboard reports.
According to Reuters, a judge sealed the details of the case, agreeing with the prosecution’s motion not to have the celebrity defendant’s case tried in the court of public opinion. The 28-year-old’s manager told Reuters that he was shooting a movie in Toronto on June 5, the date the incident at the La Rouge nightclub occurred. According to MTV News, Ja turned himself in to police on Monday morning, posted bail of $10,000 Canadian (about $7,575 US), and was released without entering a plea. He’s due back in court on Aug. 30.
The arrest marks his second brush with the law in recent weeks. Earlier this month, he was arrested in New York on charges of misdemeanor possession of marijuana and driving without a license. After he paid $550 in fines and court fees, the drug charge was dropped, and he pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license.
