DMX is arrested on car theft charges -- Police say the rapper/actor and another man tried to steal a parked car at JFK airport
In recent years, DMX has traded rapping for movie acting, but would you find him convincing in the role of an FBI agent? He may have tried to pass himself off as a fed, according to the Port Authority police at New York’s John F. Kennedy airport, who told the Associated Press that DMX (real name: Earl Simmons) and another man tried to steal a car from a third man in the airport parking lot on Thursday night.
A spokeswoman for the police told the New York Daily News that DMX, accompanied by Jackie Hudgins, allegedly identified himself as an FBI agent to a third man, then tried to yank him from his car. Simmons and Hudgins were booked and charged with attempted robbery, criminal impersonation, and criminal mischief. The suspects were expected to be taken into New York police custody in Queens as of late Thursday, AP reports.
The 33-year-old ”Cradle 2 the Grave” star has had run-ins with the law before. In 1999, he pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty, disorderly conduct, and possession of drug paraphernalia after police found 13 pit bulls, crack pipes, and a gun at his home in Teaneck, N.J. He was fined and ordered to make public service announcements on behalf of the Humane Society. In 2001, after missing a number of court appearances, he served 15 days in an Erie County, N.Y., jail for driving without a license. While incarcerated, he was fined $1,000 for throwing a food tray at a guard.
Talking to the Daily News, DMX’s lawyer, Murray Richman, declined to comment on Thursday’s arrest, saying, ”We don’t know the actual facts as of yet.” A representative for his label, Def Jam, also declined comment to EW.com on Friday.
