Blue-eyed-soul singer Teena Marie always transcended race. Now she transcends time. Though 48, and more than a decade off the charts, Marie sounds right in step with today’s neo-soul on her smashing comeback, thanks to collaborations with Cash Money producer Mannie Fresh and rapper Common. For a vintage R&B flavor, she’s paired on one track with Gerald Levert and on another with Rick James, her benefactor of old. But even the hot material and taut production can’t upstage the real star: Marie’s sexy, supple voice.
