EW talks to ''Saved by the Bell'' star Dustin Diamond
What ever happened to the charismatic nerd from Saved by the Bell? On the eve of the Seasons Three and Four DVD debut (Unrated, 11 hrs., 7 mins., 1990-91, Lions Gate), EW chatted with Dustin ”Screech” Diamond, now an older, wiser 27.
Fun fact: The back wall of ”The Max” hangout is actually covered in gum.
Yeah, it started as, you’re chewing gum before you go into the scene, you stick it on the wall. By the sixth season, there were over 5,000 pieces of gum.
You auditioned for Shaggy in 2002’s Scooby-Doo?
I tried for, like, three years to get that role. Everybody said I would make the best Shaggy. I pitched the idea to Warner Bros. They said there was no Scooby-Doo project in the works nor would there ever be. Now they’ve got Scooby-Doo 2.
And you’re a stand-up comic.
I’m basically on an endless tour, perfecting my act to get to the HBO-special level. It’s been a blast. There’s bedrooom humor and bathroom humor — it’s an adult act.
