From the babe with a baseball bat on the CD cover to the antagonistic first single, ”Step Up” (”If you wanna step up/You’re gonna get knocked down”), it’s clear Desensitized has no room for subtlety. Replacing original frontman Dave Williams, who died of heart disease in 2002, Jason ”Gong” Jones brings spunk to muscular rants like ”Love and War” and ”Hate.” But as in the past, too many of the Dallas hard-rockers’ dreary melodies smell like secondhand grunge.
