”Hellboy” is one of the 10 movies we can’t wait to see in early 2004

WHAT IT IS Yet another CGI-driven comic-book adaptation directed by Guillermo del Toro (”Blade II”). In the early part of World War II, a demon is conjured by the Nazis and captured by the Allies. The ugly lug joins the good guys and devotes his life to fighting evil and saving the world.

WHY WE CAN’T WAIT Del Toro reportedly fought to retain the comic book’s dark undertones. This could set it apart from other failed comics adaptations (we’re looking at you, ”Daredevil”).

BURNING QUESTION Will anyone besides fanboys care about a superhero who’s far from a proven franchise?

COME FOR The back story on the mystifying character in the trailer: Selma Blair’s ethereal heroine Liz Sherman

STAY FOR Ron Perlman’s prosthetic head, which looks like something out of a movie-makeup museum from the ’80s
