FEDERICO AUBELE Grand Hotel Buenos Aires Eighteenth Street Lounge

The Clash proved the groove and strategies of dub reggae could be applied to punk and, by extension, to virtually any music. Argentina’s Federico Aubele loves Latin melodies as much as groin-massaging sub-bass, and he mates them on this debut — which imagines Carlos Gardel smoking spliffs poolside while winsome waifs coo over vintage Jamaican rhythms, Spanish guitars, and whirring, Mad Professor-style tape manipulation. Like most of the stuff on Thievery Corporation’s Eighteenth Street label, it lacks the menace of the best dub. But things are scary enough these days, don’tcha think?
