Sofia Coppola on her 12 favorite records

MY BLOODY VALENTINE Loveless 1991 (Sire) ”Great, romantic, and melancholic and dreamy, one of my favorite records.”

PHOENIX United 2000 (Source/Astralwerks) ”They have a new album coming out soon [Alphabetical is due out in the U.S. this summer], which I recommend. In the meantime, this one is really good. We used the song ‘Too Young’ in Lost in Translation when Bill [Murray] and Scarlett [Johansson] are dancing. I also really love the song ‘Honeymoon.”’

NEW ORDER Power, Corruption & Lies 1983 (Qwest) ”I love New Order and I love this album and I love the cover.”

GANG OF FOUR Entertainment! 1979 (Warner Bros.) ”Really good in the car — or on headphones in the airport if you’re feeling a little aggressive. ‘Natural’s Not in It’ is my favorite song on it.”

ROXY MUSIC Avalon 1982 (Warner Bros.) ”Always good, romantic, and a classic. This has ‘More Than This’ on it and ‘To Turn You On’…for when you’re hanging out and feeling suave and sophisticated.”

N.E.R.D. In Search Of… 2002 (Virgin) ”’Truth or Dare’ is sexy, a good CD for driving at night….”

ZOOT WOMAN Living in a Magazine 2001 (Wall of Sound) ”Another one for the car…’Nobody Knows, Pt. 1′ is good when you have a secret crush.”

BILL EVANS From Left to Right 1970 (MGM) ”Jazz piano, nice in the morning or on the plane. Brian Reitzell, my music supervisor, gave this to me.”

NIRVANA MTV Unplugged in New York 1994 (DGC) ”This album is sweet, and there’s something personal about it.”

VARIOUS ARTISTS Rough Trade Shops: Electronic 01 2002 (Mute) ”Nice in the background.”

SOUNDTRACK One From the Heart 1982 (Columbia) ”Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle duets from my dad’s [director Francis Ford Coppola] movie — I love his lyrics and their voices together.”

PRINCE Prince 1979 (Warner Bros.) ”I grew up with this. The last song, ‘It’s Gonna Be Lonely,’ is perfect when you are feeling melodramatic about a goodbye.”
