Martin Donovan: He played Jesus — what’s he done since?
WHAT IT IS In Hal Hartley’s hipster dramedy, it’s Dec. 31, 1999, and a modern-day Jesus and his loyal secretary Magdalena debate whether to open the Seven Seals, which are stored inside his PowerBook computer, an act that would bring on the Apocalypse.
COSTARS Thomas Jay Ryan (Henry Fool) as Satan; indie rocker Polly Jean Harvey (center right, beside Donovan) as Magdalena
HIS CAREER B.C. In addition to roles in half a dozen Hartley films, he was Christina Ricci’s gay brother in 1998’s The Opposite of Sex and Nicole Kidman’s kissing cousin in The Portrait of a Lady (1996).
HIS CAREER A.D. He played a kidnapping victim in 2003’s Agent Cody Banks and had a role opposite Michael Douglas in The Sentinel (2006).
FINAL JUDGMENT Though Hollywood’s never given him the recognition he deserves, the hardworking Donovan may always have a personal savior in director Hartley.
