Zoe Heller, author of the novel ”What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal,” recommends Melvin Konner’s ”UNSETTLED: An Anthropology of the Jews.”

”Unsettled” is a brilliant and engrossing account of Jewish history and how it has shaped the character of Jewish culture and religion. Konner is a great storyteller, and his book is that rarest of achievements — a scholarly study that is entirely accessible to the common reader. It actually kept me up at night.
