The Must List
Film gods, Idol worship, and 8 other things we love this week
1. THE COMPANY
Party of Five vet Neve Campbell scores big pointes as a Joffrey Ballet principal-on-the-verge in Robert Altman’s delightful dance drama.
2. DOWN AND DIRTY PICTURES, BY PETER BIS-KIND
A book about the rise of Sundance and Harvey Weinstein. (Fortunately, without actual dirty pictures.)
3. ”THROUGH THE WIRE,” KANYE WEST
The Uberproducer survived an auto accident to sample Chaka Khan’s ”Through the Fire”…with his jaw wired shut. Hot — and heartwarming.
4. ABSOLUTE FRIENDS, BY JOHN LE CARRE
You probably won’t find this furious and finely drawn spy thriller on Dick Cheney’s nightstand.
While Southwest Airlines crews get ready for takeoff, travelers face entertaining snafus — and they don’t even get dinner. A&E’s series is the height of reality-show schadenfreude.
6. NILSSON SCHMILSSON, HARRY NILSSON
This newly restored rerelease of the sweet-voiced, dearly departed singer-songwriter’s 1971 album includes one of his rare hits — ”Without You” — a grand, soaring ballad schmallad.
7. ”YEAH,” LCD SOUNDSYSTEM
Even better than the disco-punk grooves on this rugged hunk of electronic indie rock? The hilariously deadpan chorus.
8. THE LADY AND THE UNICORN, BY TRACY CHEVALIER
The art-happy author weaves a tale of the tapestries hanging in Paris’ Cluny Museum.
9. MY DARLING CLEMENTINE
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll plotz: Along with Days of Wine and Roses and The Wind and the Lion, it’s among several film classics just released on DVD.
10. AMERICAN IDOL
We have no idea who’ll be in season 3, but it appears that one cowpoke has already locked up the prize for Best Clint Black Look-Alike.
