Ashanti is going back to school and getting ready to have a child. In the movies, that is. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the R&B singer is planning to make her film debut in ”Coach Carter.” She’ll play a high schooler named Kyra who is pregnant by a member of the school basketball team. (Playing the boyfriend will be Rob Brown, who also played a high school hoops star in his leading role in ”Finding Forrester.”)

The movie is based on the true story of Ken Carter, the Richmond, Calif., coach who made headlines in 1999 when he benched his undefeated team and forfeited two games because of his players’ poor academic performance. Samuel L. Jackson will play the coach. Shooting begins this month, shortly before Ashanti finds out whether she’s won any of the three Grammys for which she’s currently nominated.
