David Letterman: Jeffrey R. Staab

David Letterman putting a guest in the hot seat? Say it ain’t so! But since Oprah Winfrey told Time magazine that she has vowed to never appear on ”Late Show with David Letterman” again after feeling he made her the ”butt of his jokes,” Letterman has decided he wants her back — and this time with a mediator in tow.

The new father, who received a tub of children’s books from Winfrey as a baby present, has stated he would like Winfrey, 49, and therapist Dr. Phil McGraw (whose syndicated series she produces) to come onto his show so that he and Winfrey can mend fences. ”It will be a celebration,” Letterman, 56, stated during his Wednesday program. ”It will be like the first of the year and it will be enormous. It would be like the Super Bowl.”

So far no word from Oprah, but she may want to reconsider her vow. This might be her last opportunity to berate him for that awful Uma-Oprah joke at the 1995 Academy Awards.
