(GameCube; Capcom; Teen)

This game begins with our film-geek hero enjoying an evening at the local cineplex with his girlfriend. Midway through the show, a villain leaps out of the movie (don’t you hate when that happens?), snatches said girl, and jumps back into his silver-screen dimension. Which leaves little choice for Ordinary Guy but to leap in after her and turn into…Viewtiful Joe. And if VJ reveals its gaming DNA evolved from old side scrollers like ”Sonic the Hedgehog” (e.g., repetitive jumping and collecting power-ups), it does boast an eye-popping palette and spectacular slow-motion chopsocky fisticuffs. ”Joe” is a bit stingy on save points, causing you to repeat parts of the same level over and over (and over), but thanks to its gorgeous visuals, you’ll never tire of this ”View.”
