Networks renew freshman series
Networks renew freshman series. ''Joan of Arcadia,'' ''Whoopi'' and ''Hope and Faith'' get the go-ahead
So, have you gotten attached to ABC’s ”I’m with Her” or CBS’ ”Cold Case”? Take heart. These are just two of the series to get a thumbs up from network execs, who’ve begun placing their orders for additional scripts (which will hopefully lead to brand new episodes) for the fall’s freshman TV slate.
In addition to ”I’m with Her,” ABC has requested four fresh scripts for each of the following: the Kelly Ripa sitcom ”Hope and Faith,” ”It’s All Relative,” and Breckin Meyer’s ”Married to the Kellys.” NBC gave an even bigger vote of confidence to ”Whoopi” and John Larroquette’s ”Happy Family,” which both received an order for a quintet of new scripts.
CBS ordered six scripts of critical standout ”Joan of Arcadia” and ”Cold Case” while Fox requested just three more for the yet-to-be aired drama ”Still Life.” Fox isn’t likely to place many more orders until after the baseball season has run its course and new shows have made their debuts.
The most optimistic network was UPN, which placed full-season orders for ”All of Us” and ”Eve.” Earlier this week, NBC was the first to place a full season new drama order for ”Las Vegas,” which stars James Caan as the head of a casino surveillance team.
The Peacock network was also the first to put one of its greenhorn series on the chopping block by pulling ”Coupling” from its schedule. That stroke of scheduling genius almost makes up for renewing ”Whoopi,” but not quite.
