Facing off against a killer videotape is one thing — but battling a giant ape who’s in love with you is quite another. ”Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson has offered the Fay Wray role in his ”King Kong” remake to ”The Ring” star Naomi Watts, according to Variety. Like the 1933 original, the remake will be set in Depression-era New York, and Watts would play a Broadway actress, the trade paper reported.

Jackson, whose final ”Lord of the Rings” entry, ”The Return of the King,” is due in December, cowrote his ”Kong” screenplay with ”Rings” collaborators Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. As with ”Lord of the Rings,” ”King Kong” will be filmed in Jackson’s New Zealand. No word on casting for the ape.
