The scoop on Vanessa Carlton’s sophomore album

HER STORY The 23-year-old’s debut, ”Be Not Nobody,” went platinum, thanks to the piano-driven hits ”Ordinary Day” and ”A Thousand Miles.” She and Michelle Branch spent the next year complaining about being mistaken for each other. (For the record: Carlton’s the one dating Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind.)

HER STATUS Carlton added vocals to Counting Crows’ cover of Joni Mitchell’s ”Big Yellow Taxi,” reaching an older audience. And she’s planning an ambitious sophomore album (with production help from Jenkins), fattening her arrangements with ”choruses and flutes and trumpets.”

SHE SAYS ”I have a very clear vision of what this album is going to be,” Carlton told MTV News. ”My goal is to make a ‘Sgt. Pepper’s…’ by a solo girl.”

VERDICT It’s great that Carlton’s into the Beatles. But she might want to make her ”Rubber Soul” before attempting a career-capping ”Sgt. Pepper’s.”
