The scoop on Shakira’s sophomore album
HER STORY Already a superstar in Latin America, the belly-dancing Colombian singer/songwriter got underneath the skin of Americans with her first English-language album, 2001’s 3 million-selling ”Laundry Service.” Danceable hits like ”Whenever, Wherever” spiced up MTV and pop radio, grabbed her a major Pepsi sponsorship, and led Jewel to hire her producer, Lester Mendez, to helm the folkie’s recent musical makeover.
HER STATUS After spending the last two years touring the world, Shakira is resting on a Spanish island, where she’s begun work on her next album. Her camp isn’t releasing details yet, but don’t be surprised if the 26-year-old’s love for hard rockers like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith shows up in several of the songs.
SHE SAYS ”Right now I feel like I’m friends with my Anglo audience — very good friends — but after this live tour, I think we’re going to be lovers forever,” Shakira told Real Detroit Weekly earlier this year.
VERDICT Shakira’s mix of songwriting chops and brazen sex appeal will likely entice her loyal fanbase — including those new Anglo ”lovers” — to follow her whenever, wherever.
