Wanna hear something really scary? “Jeepers Creepers 2” is the No. 1 film in America.

I know I’m being pretty tough on this movie, but any sequel to a horror flick that earned only $37.9 million deserves a little ribbing. But “Jeepers 2” improved on the $15.8 million debut of its predecessor with an $18.5 million opening over the long Labor Day weekend, according to studio estimates. Could “Jeepers 2” actually cross $40 million in domestic receipts? Either way, I wouldn’t put “Jeepers Creepers 3″ (or ”4”) past the hit-starved folks at MGM.

Second place, meanwhile, went to the surprise hit “Freaky Friday,” which jumped two positions with an impressive $11.7 million. Over the three-day portion of the weekend, the Jamie Lee Curtis comedy slipped only 2 percent, bringing its total just shy of $90 million. The action drama “S.W.A.T.” saw a 22 percent decline to $10.5 million, increasing its take to $102.4 million.

Fourth place was a virtual tie between two Disney films. The smash “Pirates of the Caribbean” went up 9 percent from last weekend, while the Kevin Costner Western “Open Range” dipped 18 percent, both to $10.2 million. “Open Range’s” total stands at $42.9 million, while “Pirates” has now grossed $274.4 million, just $5 million behind the year’s No. 2 film, “The Matrix Reloaded.” By next week, Disney, which also released “Finding Nemo,” will have the top two films of the year.

In case you were wondering, last week’s No. 1, “Freddy Vs. Jason,” fell all the way to No. 7 with $8.1 million for the weekend. No, I didn’t really think you were wondering.
