Ready for more than just A Little Romance, Diane Lane, 38, got engaged to Josh Brolin, 35, over the July 4 weekend. This will be the second marriage for both.


Maybe they’ll call the little one Minimus. On July 21, Russell Crowe, 39, and wife Danielle Spencer, 32, announced they’re expecting their first child in January 2004…. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, 72, and wife Wendi, 35, welcomed a second daughter, Chloe, on July 17. Their first child, Grace Helen, is 20 months old. Murdoch also has four adult offspring from previous marriages.


Cameron Diaz (right), Alanis Morissette, and TIm Roth are among the former clients of convicted Wall Street financial manager Dana Giacchetto who are repaying part of the money he illegally diverted to them in 2001 (together, their reimbursements total $161,800). Other ex-clients with outstanding repayments include Tobey Maguire (around $350,000). None of the celeb clients are accused of wrongdoing…. Beam him up, Scotty: The situation is resolved! On July 16, lawyers confirmed that William Shatner, 72, and ex-wife Marcy Lafferty Shatner, 55, had settled a suit she filed in April alleging the actor had been sending her frozen semen from his prize horses rather than matter in the ”fresh, cooled format” detailed by their 1995 divorce agreement.


Going once, going twice…not going! On July 21, Manhattan auction house Christie’s withdrew Orson Welles’ 1941 Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Citizen Kane after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences objected to the sale and claimed the right to buy it back for $1. Entered into auction by the actor’s daughter and sole heir, Beatrice Welles, the statuette was expected to sell for $300,000 — 500,000. A rep for AMPAS says it hopes to resolve the matter with Welles…. On July 17, outside a Fox event in Hollywood, members of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans protested the net’s Banzai, calling the parody game show demeaning. A Fox rep claims the show ”is not meant to offend anyone.”


On July 20 in Byron Bay, Australia, Coldplay lead singer and Gwyneth Paltrow squeeze Chris Martin (below), 26, allegedly got into a tiff with photographer Jon Lister, 47, who snapped photos of him at a beach and claims Martin smashed his windshield. Martin is due in a local court on Oct. 8 to respond to allegations of malicious damage. A rep for Coldplay had no comment.


Cuban ”Queen of Salsa” Celia Cruz, 77, in Fort Lee, N.J., of brain cancer (see article on page 78)…. Stage star Elisabeth Welch, 99, credited with bringing the Charleston to Broadway, who collaborated with Cole Porter and Harold Arlen, in London, July 15, of undisclosed causes…. Grifter David Hampton, 39, whose claim of being Sidney Poitier’s son inspired the play and film Six Degrees of Separation, late June, in NYC, after a long battle with AIDS.
