When it comes to libel suits, Nicole Kidman must have learned a thing or two from Tom Cruise. Reuters reports that she won in court on Thursday in her lawsuit against Britain’s Daily Mail, an action she filed after the paper alleged she’d been having an affair with her married ”Cold Mountain” costar, Jude Law.

Although Law’s marriage to actress Sadie Frost has been on the rocks over the past year, with the couple having separated, he and Kidman have both denied that they had an affair while shooting the movie (due in theaters this Christmas) last summer in Romania. The Daily Mail published its allegation in March, during the height of Kidman’s ultimately successful campaign for a Best Actress Oscar for ”The Hours.” Some Oscar watchers thought rumors of an affair with Law could taint her chances among propriety-minded Academy voters. Kidman may have thought so as well; as her lawyer told the High Court in London, ”The publication of this article has caused grave damage to the claimant’s personal and professional reputation and she has suffered considerable embarrassment and distress.”

Kidman sued even though the paper had retracted its report. Now, in accordance with the ruling, the Daily Mail will have to issue an apology and pay unspecified damages and legal costs.
