Following up ”About Schmidt,” director Alexander Payne plans another movie about a balding guy on a pre-wedding road trip. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Payne’s about to shoot ”Sideways,” a comedy starring Paul Giamatti (”Big Fat Liar”). As always, Payne and writing partner Jim Taylor are writing the screenplay, which is based on a soon-to-be-published novel by Rex Pickett.

Giamatti, who plays comic-book writer Harvey Pekar in this year’s Sundance hit ”American Splendor,” and who is probably still best known for the role of Pig Vomit in Howard Stern’s ”Private Parts,” will play a guy out for one last binge before he gets married. A trip to California wine country gets the pair into trouble with wine and women (one of whom will be played by ”Arli$$”’ Sandra Oh, who is Payne’s real-life wife) and come to reassess their lives, much like Jack Nicholson did in ”Schmidt.”

”Schmidt” earned a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for Payne and Taylor and Oscar nominations for Nicholson and hot-tubbing Kathy Bates. Fox Searchlight will begin production on ”Sideways” in September.
