THE WAY HOME
A formulaic but ultimately sweet story of a city boy (Yoo) forced to live with his grandmother (Kim) in the Korean countryside. Not surprisingly, the bratty kid ends up learning a thing or two from his seemingly simple forebear (to the movie’s credit, the sappiness is kept to a minimum). As the petulant youth, Yoo hits all the right notes, but it is Kim who maintains the emotional center: Her mute, hunched character’s unconditional care for the ungrateful 7-year-old is, in a word, heartbreaking.
