Here's what the cast of ''Friends'' is up to this week. Is Courteney preggers? Plus, Matthew Perry spills on his drinking problem
THE FULL MONICA British tabloid rumor of the week: Courteney Cox is three months pregnant. The story appeared in The Sun, where it was duly noted that the 38-year-old actress has suffered two miscarriages and is surely hoping, along with husband David Arquette, that the third time will be the charm. ”She has been desperate to start a family ever since she got married but she hasn?t had much luck in the past,” the Sun quotes a source close to the couple as saying. ”She went to see some fertility specialists at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles last year, and she and David have been trying for months.” The source added, ”They’re both scared and excited about the pregnancy and have their fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong.”
So far, Cox’s publicists have been mum on whether she’s going to be a mum, but the Sun printed another article, complete with photo of Cox patting what may be a discreetly bulging tummy. That story quotes a pal as saying, ”Courteney can?t believe how lucky she is; she feels blessed. She is positively glowing, and she can?t stop touching her tum.” Of course, on ”Friends,” Monica and Chandler have been having their own difficulties conceiving a child; if Cox really does have a bun in the oven, no doubt Monica will, too.
Meanwhile, Cox has another gestating project, the indie-film drama ”November,” in which she’ll play a woman who loses her grip on reality after her boyfriend is shot to death during a convenience store robbery. According to news this week in the Hollywood Reporter, Anne Archer, James LeGros, and Nora Dunn are in talks to join the cast. Shooting begins next month.
LONDON CALLING Matthew Perry didn’t mind that his addictions to alcohol and painkillers became public knowledge; in fact, he was glad. ”I got to help more people than I would have done had it remained private,” he told BBC1 TV host Michael Parkinson on Saturday. Perry, who’s in London rehearsing for his West End stage debut (he’s starring with Minnie Driver in a revival of David Mamet’s ”Sexual Perversity in Chicago”), told Parkinson that he was drinking as much as a quart of vodka a day. ” There was a certain point in my life when I’d have tried to drink you, Michael,” he said. Fortunately, he’s been clean for a year. ”It wasn’t a question of strength,” Perry said. ”It was a question of whether I wanted to live or die — that was the real decision. I’m happy to say that I chose life.”
Perry also took the opportunity to dismiss rumors of a fling with ”Serving Sara” costar Elizabeth Hurley. ”I certainly like the rumor that I was the father of Elizabeth Hurley’s baby,” he said. ”It made me think I could impregnate women in a different way [from] everyone else. Elizabeth and I were never alone in a room together, so I must be a very powerful man indeed. Actually, I’m thinking of suing the baby.”
