Sandler, Bynes, win big at Kids Choice Awards. Jim Carrey gets slimed at the Nickelodeon event
Adam Sandler was rewarded for his childishness this weekend by a group of experts: the young Nickelodeon viewers who voted in the channel’s 16th annual Kids’ Choice Awards. Sandler picked up two trophies, shaped like the channel’s logo, an orange blimp, for Favorite Movie Actor (for ”Mr. Deeds”) and Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie (for ”8 Crazy Nights”). Hard to say which was the greater honor: his Kids’ Choice kudos or his record-setting opening this weekend for ”Anger Management.”
Amanda Bynes, the teen queen currently onscreen in ”What a Girl Wants,” also picked up two blimps, for Favorite Movie Actress (for last year’s ”Big Fat Liar”) and Favorite TV Actress (for Nickelodeon’s ”The Amanda Show.” Other big winners included ”SpongeBob SquarePants,” who won Favorite Cartoon for his eponymous show and Favorite Videogame for ”SpongeBob Squarepants and Revenge of the Flying Dutchmen.” Also earning two blimps was the movie ”The Tuxedo,” which won Favorite Butt Kickers (Male and Female) for Jackie Chan and Jennifer Love Hewitt. A silver blimp went to Will Smith, for the ”Wannabe” award given to role models.
It was a rough night for Justin Timberlake, who lost Favorite Male Singer to Nelly (Ashanti was Favorite Female Singer), and who nearly crossed paths backstage with his ex, Britney Spears. On the plus side, he won the onstage belching contest, beating such powerful lungs as Kelly Clarkson’s and David Hasselhoff’s. ”I’ve been able to ruin many moments at family reunions, many dinners with the family,” he later told USA Today. ”I’ve been smacked many times for it. But see, now I can go home and say, ‘Mom, aren’t you proud?”’
Hosted for the seventh year in a row by Rosie O’Donnell, the awards show, held at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar, is best known for drawing A-list celebs willing to be covered in Nickelodeon’s signature green slime. Skateboarder Tony Hawk (named Favorite Male Athlete) skated down a ramp into an 11,000-gallon vat of the goo, while Jim Carrey got hosed with slime and covered with feathers. He turned the hose on O’Donnell and the first few rows of kids in the audience, much to their delight. Asked backstage what the slime feels like, he told USA Today, ”It feels like love, man, slimey-gooey love.”
