This masterful 11-track set includes nine terrific new songs, on a par with the Allmans’ long- established canon. The righteous twin-slide attack is back, courtesy of soulful guitarists Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule) and Derek Trucks (drummer Butch’s nephew). Best of all is Gregg Allman’s burnished voice — as smoky as Kentucky’s best sour mash — bemoaning (we suspect) former bandmate Dickey Betts’ wicked ways (”High Cost of Low Living”) and longin’ for his lady of the swamps (”Desdemona”). Pain never sounded so good.
