Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony
The documentary Amandla! suffered from an overabundance of windy talking heads, which diluted the film’s purpose: to demonstrate the vital role music played in black South Africans’ long struggle for freedom. The CD corrects this error by letting us hear the full songs the movie’s editors reduced to mere snippets. Sadly, though, the best cuts (by Miriam Makeba, Nancy Jacobs, and various community choirs) barely make up for overproduced tracks and uninformative liner notes.
