As expected, Oscar voters smiled upon ”Chicago” and ”The Hours,” though ”Gangs of New York” did better than expected. ”Chicago” got 13 nominations, one shy of the record held by ”Titanic” and ”All About Eve.” ”Gangs” followed with 10 citations, and ”Hours” earned nine.

”Adaptation”’s Meryl Streep and ”About Schmidt”’s Jack Nicholson both were nominated; Streep is now the most nominated performer ever (13 career nominations), and Nicholson is now the most nominated actor (12 career nominations). Streep missed out on a two-fer, failing to earn a Best Actress nomination for ”The Hours,” but ”Hours” castmate Julianne Moore did get two nods, a supporting nomination for ”Hours” and a lead-role nod for ”Far From Heaven.”

The nominees were announced at a pre-dawn press conference at Academy headquarters, with the names read by 1992 Oscar winner Marisa Tomei and Academy president Frank Pierson. The 75th annual Academy Awards ceremony will be held March 23 at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre.
