The whole quirk-for-quirk’s-sake movement has really got to stop, if only to keep us from ever having to sit through tedious movies like this. Ostensibly about a dark-side pharmacologist (Jackson) who needs to score a deal for the ultimate drug he’s invented, 51 seems to exist only to give Carlyle (who has set some kind of promise-wasted record since ‘Trainspotting’) a paycheck for playing an obscenity-spewing sensitive football hooligan, Emily Mortimer (‘Lovely & Amazing’) a way to shirk that pesky talented-actress label, and Jackson a chance to tool around England dolled up like Latrell Sprewell in a kilt.
