Set in Manchester, England, from the late ’70s to the early ’90s, director Michael Winterbottom’s zippy mockumentary follows the rise and fall and rise again of record-label honcho Tony Wilson, who gave careers to the likes of seminal Brit bands Joy Division and New Order. As the amusingly egomaniacal Wilson, comedian Coogan delivers a cheeky breakthrough performance, wandering through the circus-like raves as if he were a post-punk prince. It’s sheer ecstasy.
