''Kangaroo Jack'' hops to No. 1 at the box office -- The family comedy beats out the week's other debuts, ''National Security'' and ''A Guy Thing''

The family comedy ”Kangaroo Jack” stuffed $17.7 million into its pouch this weekend, landing at No. 1 at the box office. ”Jack” beat the Martin Lawrence/Steve Zahn buddy comedy ”National Security,” which scored $15.7 million to land at No. 2.

Last week’s No. 1, ”Just Married,” fell to No. 3, earning a still-solid $12.5 million. ”The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” meanwhile, hit $11.4 million, claiming the No. 4 spot and bringing its total take to nearly $300 million. ”Catch Me if You Can” was close behind, hitting No. 5 with $11.3 million.

The oft-rescheduled comedy ”A Guy Thing,” starring Jason Lee and Julia Stiles, earned a weak $7.1 million, debuting at No. 7. ”The Hours” opened in additional theaters over the weekend, helping it enter the top 10 at No. 9, with $4.7 million earned.

The rest of the top 10 include ”Chicago” ($8 millon) at No. 6, ”About Schmidt” ($6.3 million) at No. 8, and ”Two Weeks Notice,” ($4.1 million) at No. 10.
