''Fellowship'' tops People's Choice Awards. ''Lord of the Rings,'' ''Friends'' each pick up two of the poll-driven prizes

The 29th annual People’s Choice Awards kicked off the awards season Sunday by spreading the wealth. No honoree won more than two prizes, and even the top winner, best motion picture ”The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” had to share its honor with ”Spider-Man.” (”Fellowship” also won best dramatic motion picture.) The other multiple honoree was ”Friends,” which earned best television comedy series and best female television performer, for Jennifer Aniston.

Unlike most awards shows, where the winners are selected by industry insiders, the People’s Choice honors are selected via a nationwide Gallup poll. Many of the winners noted how special the award was, since it was decided by fans. Nonetheless, several winners were no-shows, including Julia Roberts (who won for the fourth year in a row), Mel Gibson, and all the musical winners except Faith Hill

CBS, which produces the show, broadcast it live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, with Tony Danza as host. A full list of winners is below.
