Susan Sarandon to play cancer-stricken doctor

In both ”Stepmom” and ”Igby Goes Down,” Susan Sarandon played a doomed cancer victim. But in the upcoming CBS TV movie ”Ice Bound,” Sarandon will star as Dr. Jerri Nielsen, a real-life breast cancer survivor, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Nielsen was forced to treat her own cancer while stranded on the South Pole, a story chronicled in her best-seller ”Ice Bound: A Doctor’s Incredible Battle for Survival at the South Pole.”

Sarandon was just nominated for a Golden Globe for her ”Igby” performance, which climaxed with an assisted suicide. ”Ice Bound” will be the first project from Miramax’s book division to be adapted into a film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
