THAT OLD ACE IN THE HOLE Annie Proulx (Scribner, $26, on sale Dec. 12) Don’t you wish your name was Ribeye Cluke? Or Bob Dollar, Cy Frease, LaVon Fronk, Tater Crouch, Jerky Baum, Waldo Beautyrooms, Parch Wilpin, Habakuk van Melkebeek, Hefran Wardrip, Hugh Dough, Big Head Haley, or Bromo Redpoll? The Shipping News author is back, and she’s not stingy with the wacky monikers.

A WHISTLING WOMAN A.S. Byatt (Knopf, $26, on sale Dec. 10) Not a Lauren Bacall bio, but instead the last book in Byatt’s quartet of novels on English life.

UTOPIA Lincoln Child (Doubleday, $24.95, on sale Dec. 24) Doubleday calls it ”Die Hard meets Jurassic Park.” Cool, we’re thinking — dinosaurs in a skyscraper! Turns out it’s more about terrorists taking over an amusement park. Darn.
