‘CLAUSE’ AND EFFECT

Early Christmas bells were ringing for Buena Vista this weekend, as Tim Allen’s The Santa Clause 2 gift-wrapped first place with a jolly $29 million — a ho-ho-hopping $10 million more than the original’s second-place bow way back in 1994. While Naomi Watts continued to lure audiences into her Ring, upping the thriller’s three-week gross to $64.5 million, Eddie Murphy’s annus horribilis (Showtime, The Adventures of Pluto Nash) persisted with I Spy’s feeble debut. And the successful expansions of Frida and Bowling for Columbine may get a little trickier now that we’re entering the jam-packed holiday season.
