By any estimation, ABC’s adaptation of Herman Wouk’s World War II epic was the most ambitious miniseries of all time, taking nearly five years to write and produce at a cost of $150 million. Costarring Polly Bergen, Barry Bostwick, Sir John Gielgud, John Rhys-Davies, Victoria Tennant, and a pre-”Basic Instinct” Sharon Stone, Wouk’s sequel to ”The Winds of War” (which, alas, is still available only on VHS) follows the military, political, and romantic travails of the star-spangled Henry family. While the action centers on the war in the Pacific, the American home front, and the dissolution of the Third Reich (featuring Steven Berkoff as a maniacally animated Hitler), it’s writer-director Dan Curtis’ hair-raising depiction of Holocaust atrocities — filmed on-site at the Auschwitz camp in Poland — that resonates the most.
