Oh, those colorful Southern women! Aren’t they just delightful as they bulldoze everyone around them with their supposedly endearing eccentricity? Well, no. And though it provides grist for her writing, grown-up Sidda (Bullock) seems rightly alienated from the destruction wrought by her mother, the disappointed Southern belle Vivi (Burstyn). Enter the titular wacky gals, who — via a drug-aided kidnapping and scrapbook-induced flashbacks (with Ashley Judd as the young Vivi) — force-feed Sidda some if-you-only-knew understanding. Trouble is, no amount of Ya-Ya manhandling can controvert the plain truth: As a mom, Vivi really sucked.
