Or, misery of bad casting. In a charmless adaptation of Pierre Marivaux’s 18th-century romantic farce, Sorvino plays a princess who disguises herself as a man so she can win over her sworn enemy, a young prince (Jay Rodan). To do so, she must bypass his guardians, a cold philosopher (Kingsley) and his buttoned-up sister (Fiona Shaw). Sorvino ends up seducing the lot of them, but the question is how? Her stiff performance weighs down what should have been a light-hearted affair.
