In his pan of Swept Away, the romantic misfire starring Madonna and Adriano Giannini (above), New York Times critic A.O. Scott writes: ”After a while I found myself wishing they would, on their island wanderings, run into Tom Hanks and his volleyball and exchange their grilled octopus recipe for some acting lessons.” (Audiences apparently agreed: Swept, with a reported $10 million budget, grossed just $354,000 in moderate release.) But is it fair to compare Mrs. Guy Ritchie, a Razzie winner for Worst Actress in 2000’s Next Best Thing, with Wilson (inset), who was named Best Inanimate Object by the Broadcast Film Critics Association for Cast Away? ”Not every actor can be as well-rounded as Wilson,” says Wilson Sporting Goods’ Alan Davenport. ”He is not just another pretty face.”
