All Is Vanity
In All Is Vanity Margaret is a thirtysomething New Yorker who gives up a respectable career, strains an otherwise stable marriage, and destroys a childhood friendship in her frenzied attempt to write a novel. Meanwhile, her friend Letty writes novelistic e-mails chronicling her rather unbelievable financial demise. Disaster ensues when Margaret turns Letty’s hardships into fodder for her own starved literary imagination. In this witty, if at times trite, novel about the interplay between love and vanity in female friendship, Schwarz — whose last book was the Oprah-ratified ”Drowning Ruth” — turns her cynical eye on these women, smartly revealing their hypocrisies and willful self-delusions.
