Consider it The Bed and Breakfasts of Dare County. Sparks, no slouch when it comes to a sales hook, employs many of the same elements of Robert James Waller’s weepie in his Outer Banks romance. A woman thinks she’s past her prime; a man reawakens her before heading off to distant lands; passion burns, hearts break. When Adrienne meets Paul, something about his trim physique and penetrating eyes suggests lover material: ”He knows me, she suddenly thought. Or could know me if I gave him the chance.” Sure, words strung together like this don’t really mean anything. But anyone who fell for past romances like The Notebook reads for the sentiment, not the sentences.
