Howard’s sophomore effort finds the eastern Kentucky native veering from deep-dish hillbilly to middle-of-the-road pop, handling both with aplomb and tempering her hill-country accent when needed. But it’s the rawer stuff that sticks in the memory. Check out ”Jesus and Bartenders,” in which ”one man offers comfort from the cross/The other only comfort on the rocks.” Now, that’s country!
