Is it a groundbreaking multi-media orgy of sight and sound, mixing dynamic cinema verite with some of the best rap music on the planet, with an interesting technological twist? Or is it the work of five stoned, self-indulgent slacker hippies (left) wasting their parents’ money? To make One Big Trip–a single disc featuring a DVD documentary on one side and a CD soundtrack on the other–a group of postcollegiate comrades videotaped their RV tour of America on the eve of the new millennium. Unfortunately, the docu devotes more time to their Ecstasy-, ‘shroom-, and acid-fueled antics than their compelling interviews with the homeless people, junkies, and hicks they met along the way. Still, on the DVD’s flip side, the troupe managed to create the indie-hop mix tape of the year, with choice new cuts from Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. It’s the real trip-hop.
