Shot is everything a thriller should be: spare enough to keep the tension constant, but brimming with fully realized characters who are heroic, in part, because of their flaws; smart enough, with its biochemical warfare-centered plot, to keep the reader guessing, but never didactic. At the heart of the book is Lucy Greene, whose husband is killed. The poor woman doesn’t get to play the grieving widow for more than a minute before she’s on the run, accompanied by a former flame and an ex-convict. Telling more would ruin the fun, and this is damn good fun.
