A skeletal bluesman who resembles Kate Moss in a wifebeater, Whitley has an ancient/modern sensibility like Ben Harper’s, only darker. This set works forward from his fairly upbeat early material to 1995’s howling, drug-themed Din of Ecstasy; his scarred ‘n’ stripped-down latter-day acoustic sessions; and a taste of his recent indigo-pop rebirth. A useful and tasty introduction, but fans of the more haunted stuff should search out 2000’s covers comp, Perfect Day, oddly ignored here.
